This is an interactive 3D render for my lyric project created in my second year of study at university. Using a chosen lyric to create a graphic outcome, my chosen song for this project was The Message by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. The line which I have used here is "its like a sometimes, It makes me wonder how I keep from going under"

As I was continuing my development into 3D design and printing I wanted to use it for this project. I design this piece as an idea for a large sculpture which would live somewhere deep in a busy city, with the lines of text wrapped around and covering themself to represent the lyrics.

I started my design using layering text to create a look of confusion and busyness. I created the design process in illustrator with layering options which would work for screen printing outcomes. This was before having my final idea to create the 3D sculpture.
I began with my simple sketch which I created quickly in Sketchup. I used sketch up for my first design as it allows me to create structure quickly but doesn’t have the same detail and using something like Fusion or Rino. I used these beams to represent the bands of text to keep it simple. My first idea for fabricating this was to print the bands already in the rings. the issue with doing it like this is the words would not be printable with lots of supports and seen below. This adds a lot of wasted material and nearly doubles the print time. I then desired to print the text flat on the print bed and then form it into the different size arcs. To calculate the biggest ring of the model I took the max length that I could across the print bed which was 28cm across. I worked out that I wanted a space of 60 degrees between each end of the text. From there I was able to calculate the diameter of the ring.
